Have you heard of SCASA?
The Speciality Coffee Association of South Africa, or SCASA, is a non-profit organisation with a passion for coffee. Many people have not yet heard of SCASA and personally I think anyone who enjoys coffee should know about them. Hey, and you can become a member of SCASA quick and easy.
SCASA are the people responsible for organising the barista competitions countrywide. Actually as I write this the Western Cape Regionals are taking place at Hostex in Cape Town. All the competition dates and events are on their website so just click HERE.
Here is an excerpt from their ‘about us’ section and this is exactly why I admire SCASA and the work they do for the coffee culture in South Africa.
SCASA endeavours to uphold the following mission…
- Commitment to quality
- Spirit of co-operation
- Dedication to continuing education for our members
- Sensitivity to the environment
- Consciousness of social issues.
- Encouragement of sound business practices and ethics
- Increased employment
I have spent a lot of time on their website recently and love all the news that is posted about coffee related topics and events in South Africa. You can also follow them on Facebook & Twitter for quick updates on upcoming competitions and coffee news.
If you are interested in reading up more about SCASA, entering a barista competition, or becoming a member visit their website HERE.
The coffee industry in South Africa is growing and the more support that we as coffee lovers show to the people leading the charge, the greater the coffee culture will be.
