I came across this great diagram of what a coffee tree needs to be happy, posted by SCAA on their Facebook Page. As I read further into their Specialty Coffee Chronicle I was enlightened around the subject of Coffee Tree Biology.
Emma Bladyka, Coffee Science Manager, at SCAA writes an in-depth article with emphasis on the following… “There are three main factors influencing the “happiness” of a plant: genetics, the environment, and applied agricultural management.”
Emma is very clear about the fact that this is basic Coffee Tree Biology and that there are obviously other factors that effect coffee farming, that are not planned.
Did you know:
The biological name for a coffee tree is Coffea Arabica.
Coffea Arabica is endemic to the Ethiopian Highlands and South Sudan.
The Coffea Arabica tree grows best in Indonesia, Brazil, and Jamaica.
The rest of the article involves the needs of a coffee tree including the nutrients, irrigation and soil management, adequate growing conditions, as well as shade management.
So if you are into the biology of the coffee tree you can read the whole article here.
