Most people who travel to Cape Town have visited the Old Biscuit Mill, but have they been to Espresso Lab for a cup of coffee? I had been to the Biscuit Mill countless times and yet this was my first visit to Espresso Lab. I cannot believe that this gem of a coffee shop was not on my radar. Actually Espresso Lab is more than just a coffee shop. I believe that Espresso Lab is one of the most unique coffee experiences in South Africa.
Why? Espresso Lab aren’t just serving coffee for coffee’s sake. This microroastery is dedicated to serving the best coffee, sourced from freshly harvested beans, and roasted in house. They uphold sustainability and fair trade and develop relationships with the farmers from where they source their beans.
What makes Espresso Lab unique?
The whole feel of this coffee shop/roastery is “lab-like”. The dominant colour is white and their cold coffee options are served in jars and measuring jugs. There is no question that Espresso Lab are serious about coffee and the science of the roasting coffee. The coffee menu is labelled as though out of a periodic table of espresso based drinks. There is nothing quite like it in South Africa and I recommend this coffee shop to anyone visiting Cape Town.
Espresso Lab currently serve coffee from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Kenya, Brazil, and Ethiopia. You can purchase their beans online HERE.
