In my last blog post I mentioned my favourite coffee shops along the Midlands Meander, one of them being Steampunk Cafe. Up until recently Steampunk Cafe was a roadside coffee shop, driven by passionate coffee man Michael Goddard. Now Steampunk is not only a coffee shop, but Michael is roasting on site too.
I recently went through to the Midlands for a day and spent the morning at Steampunk Cafe. I enjoyed a delicious Flat White paired with a custard tart similar to that of a pasteis de nata (Spanish custard tart).
What I so enjoy about Steampunk Cafe is that it really is driven to support community. The locals love stopping by to grab a takeaway en-route to work and when new visitors enter the staff are so friendly and make every effort to create a welcoming environment. Below are some pictures from my visit and more info for you about Steampunk Cafe.
Michael is a humble man, who openly admits that he is always learning more about coffee. He told me how he will often spend time listening to people in the industry and learn from trying out their methods, and deducing what works best for his coffee. Michael is roasting all his own coffee now, and he pays special attention to each coffee individually. The source, the size, the harvest method are all taken into account before roasting and Michael tracks his roasts ensuring he is getting the best out of the beans.
I want to encourage you to visit Steampunk Cafe. Ask Michael as many questions as you have about coffee, and he will answer you with the knowledge that he has learnt from practise and trying out new coffee brewing and roasting methods.
Steampunk Cafe is on the R103 road, at the Tokans Garage. Check them out on Facebook for directions and what coffee they’re pouring. Oh and take cash or pay with Zapper!!!!!
